Decision-making responsibility is the responsibility to make significant decisions regarding a child’s well-being, such as health, education, and culture. As of March 1, 2021, a parent who has “custody” of a child under a custody order now has decision-making responsibility. Decision-making responsibility may be shared between the child’s parents, or only one parent may be granted decision-making responsibility.

Parenting time refers to the amount of time that a child spends in a parent’s care. Parents are entitled to parenting time, unless a court determines that it is not in the child’s best interests.
